Here with another daily dose of nostalgia for you guys. With the recent digital release of previously featured The Seams self-titled debut EP (a great debut release by the way), I’ve been on a huge Jonathan Lullo (ex-Down To Earth Approach) kick. Aside from the fact that I think Lullo is one of the scene’s most underrated frontmen, I’ve always been a huge fan of his unique delivery and honest composition. There has always been a certain quality and consistency to his songs that separated his performance from any number of acts of a similar nature.
Hailing from Batavia, New York, the relatively young indie-rock quintet Down To Earth Approach released their Vagrant records debut Another Intervention in 2004. In a musical year packed to the brim with fantastic releases (2004 is continually argued as one of our little scene’s finests in fact), DTEA’s debut quickly found its way among my personal favorites. Songs like the record’s title track, “Triple Black,” and “We’re Sleeping” were all undeniably catchy pop songs with just enough lyrical substance and indie-rock polish to warrant repeat samplings. Suprisingly enough, nearly five years after its initial release, Another Intervention still makes its way into my weekly rotation of tunes.
Despite my fondness for the record, upon its late summer release the record was met with less than favorable reviews. Many critics labeled the band Vagrant’s newest fail-safe signee. Others were quick to repeat the “safe” monicker, suggesting that the albums derivative sound and cute hooks left much to be desired. In hindsight, even Lullo himself has taken issue with much of the record citing inexperience as a songwriter and straining himself vocally at fault for the the debut’s shortcomings.
While I’m hesistant to disagree with the man responsible for the tunes, I have always found a sincere sense of urgency in the slight strain in his voice, one of the Intervention’s most appealing attributes. And while I’ll admit the band’s second and final release Come Back to You featured a songwriter far more confident in his ability and personal in his content, I do not believe that takes away from the merits of DTEA’s first outing.
Enjoy the above track “We’re Sleeping,” one of my personal favorite tracks from Another Intervention. Do yourself a favor and look into Down To Earth Approaches small catalogue as well as Jonathan’s new project, The Seams. You won’t be disappointed.
